The Z Files: Marcia Carringon ~ Libra

Astrology ~ a bit of fun, a load of rubbish, or something to take seriously?

I invited around 70 writers/bloggers to write a piece about how typical they are of their sign, and how its traits affect their writing life ~ if at all...

Has your favourite writer been featured yet?  Links to all previous posts at the end of this one :)

Now I'd like to introduce someone who always tries to make Twitter and the indie publishing world a helpful and supportive place, in the nicest, harmonious, Libra way possible.  Welcome to Marcia Carrington, a frequent blogger and writer of short, light romances ~ you can find out all about her and her books (with links to all sites) on this part of her blog, Marcia's Book Talk
Rather than send me a photo of herself, Marcia sent me the picture she uses for her profile on Twitter, which I imagine many tweeters-about-books will recognise.

"Being a Libran, I believe that I am artistically orientated, and do love beauty. Beauty whether it be in people and their hearts, clothing, places, food, furniture…the list goes on. As for everything being balanced and harmonious, I sometimes want everything TOO balanced at times, and that may sap spontaneity if the line is too straight, the shoes at home lining up exactly with each other, or other such things! "

"As for being indecisive, yes, I have been guilty of that in the past, and less in the present, but it’s funny, with writing, I’m never indecisive, and don’t waver! If I have a release date for a book, I don’t deviate from this, deliver it on time, and quickly choose the cover models for my books. It is more clear cut for me, oddly enough, and being a Libran this may seem strange that I don’t mull over things much more, but I don’t! The place I can be very indecisive, though, is in the supermarket, especially when there are so many delights on offer, and it can be difficult to choose between lemon cheesecakes or baked American cheesecakes, for example - now these are heart-rending dilemmas for me!"

Aha, and did you know that Librans are supposed to have a particularly sweet tooth??? Do follow Marcia on Twitter, she's a charming lady :)

Now, the famous Libran writers....

.... first up, here's Nora Roberts, American author of over 200 romance novels -
how does anyone physically manage to write that many??!!

... and for no reason other than he hasn't appeared on The Z Files yet ~
Libran Oscar Wilde

The Z Files: Joanne Phillips ~ Aries

Astrology ~ a bit of fun, a load of rubbish, or something to take seriously?

I invited around 70 writers/bloggers to write a piece about how typical they are of their sign, and how its traits affect their writing life ~ if at all...

Has your favourite writer been featured yet?  Links to all previous posts at the end of this one :)

Today I'm delighted to welcome someone I've known online since shortly after I started this self-publishing lark, and whose huge success is well deserved ~ Aries light romance, contemporary fiction and cosy mystery writer, Joanne PhillipsJo's not only popular with the reading public but is also extremely helpful to other writers, sharing advice and her experiences on the self-publishing section of her site, on which you can also read about her Writers Workshop ~ it's all HEREHer very first novel, back in 2012, was the widely read Can't Live Without, and her latest, touching emotional drama Keeping Sam, has just been published.

Greetings, Jo, and please tell us about your Aries self!

Jo and Aquarius husband, Jez ~ more later!

Aries:

Determined, a leader, strong, honest, straightforward, ready to voice opinion and a champion of the underdog... but can also be brusque, impatient, prejudiced, arrogant.

"I grew up with an acute awareness of zodiac signs, and I’ve often wondered how many of my Aries qualities are innate and how many were influenced by the wonderful Linda Goodman books I absorbed as a teenager and young adult. Either way, I know that I am all the things listed above and many more - good and bad; every one of us has light and shade in our personalities."

"My determination has shown itself through the drive to self-publish six books since 2012, sacrificing nothing in quality along the way, absolutely adamant I would produce books that looked and felt the same as traditional ‘bookshop’ quality books. I go my own way, however, and wouldn’t dream of imposing these values onto other people. In the Aries profile above, the description ‘champion of the underdog’ is one I relate to - I am always ready to jump on a cause if I feel people are being treated unfairly. In the indie world, for example, there are regular attempts to ‘police’ self-publishing output (usually by those with their own books or products to sell), but I have argued against this in the past, even while striving for excellence in my own work. This apparent contradiction is quite typical for an Aries - it’s all very much “Be independent; don’t follow the crowd.” Everyone has the right to do their own thing - I’ve been known to argue for the principle of something, even when I don’t actually agree with it. I guess I just like a good argument!

Sometimes an independent spirit can be quite isolating; I’m not a sociable person by nature, and I’m not sure how typical this is of an Aries woman. As it says in the description above, I am strong, and I can’t help but be honest - primarily with myself. I am tactful and sensitive too, however: my honesty is not the bracing, hurtful kind, which is a common misconception about honest people, I think. The worst kind of liars are the kind that believe their own lies. I can always tell if I’m not being 100% authentic in my life as I start to feel physically sick, and then I have to do something about it quickly!"

"Now for the negatives! Brusqueness comes from being impatient, and I’m certainly more impatient than most :) Arrogance isn’t a great quality, but I guess it is possible to come over this way occasionally when you appear to be confident in your own knowledge and abilities. As for prejudiced, I guess I do have a tendency to pre-judge situations - I think it’s the writer in me, in that I use my imagination to pre-think what a situation might be like. I never pre-judge people, though. I have become more humble as I’ve grown older and wiser - I think my Aries characteristics are softened now, whereas they were more brash and overt in my twenties and thirties."

"One Aries characteristic that isn’t mentioned very often is innocence. We are the babies of the zodiac. Everything is new to us, every experience seen with wide-eyed wonder. I’m often caught out by how cruel and calculating some people can be; with me what you see is what you get, and while I can be outspoken, I would never intentionally hurt someone. We Aries may be strong but we are also vulnerable - never more so than when we lay ourselves open to betrayal by those we trust. These wounds cut deep, and it’s taken me many years to learn not to be so trusting. In the self-publishing world I’ve been happy to give help and advice to many writers, and so far I’ve only been stabbed in the back once. Once was enough, though. It’s made me wary."

"I’ll finish by saying that my husband, who is a scientist and doesn’t believe in the zodiac at all, is a typical Aquarius, and that our partnership - Aries woman/Aquarius man - is everything Linda Goodman promised me it would be in her excellent book Love Signs all those years ago. I had been searching for him my whole life. I don’t think anyone else could put up with me, or bring out the best in me, the way he does. And whenever I get down, or feel overwhelmed, I remind myself of those positive Aries qualities I used to read about when I was a teenager and I remember why I wanted to emulate them as I grew into the woman I am today. Or did I already have them? I guess I’ll never know."

Jo, I love this piece!  I am sending it to my Aries sister to read as soon as it comes out, as she's been in a happy relationship with an Aquarius man for some years.  I love that you mentioned the 'childlike' thing - one of my favourite Ariens is Steven Tyler of Aerosmith; at the age of 68 he still displays that childlike wonder of which you spoke.  The babies of the zodiac, yes; I believe each sign represents an age of man.  Leo is your average 18 year old ~ stepping out in the world and enjoying everything on offer (yee-hah!).  And Aquarius is the 11th sign ~ of very old age and wisdom, when you've done everything and been everywhere you're ever likely to do.  Perhaps they keep Aries calm :)  Really makes me laugh about Linda Goodman's Love Signs, too - I had that book in my teens!

You can see all Jo's books HERE, and follow her on Twitter HERE.

Now.... two famous ram writers to go with Jo....

... the first one I've chosen is chick lit goddess Trisha Ashley ~ who actually appeared on The Z Files a few weeks ago!  You can read her piece HERE

... and perhaps she's a bit childlike too ~

The Z Files: Louise Marley ~ Virgo

Astrology ~ a bit of fun, a load of rubbish, or something to take seriously?

I invited around 70 writers/bloggers to write a piece about whether or not they're typical of their zodiac sign, and how its traits affect their writing life ~ if at all...

Has your favourite writer been featured yet?  Links to all previous posts at the end of this one :)

A thirteenth part of the Novelistas, Louise Marley is also a very helpful Virgo!  She writes romantic comedy and romantic suspense, sometimes a combination of the two, and is lucky enough to live in Wales with a view of Snowdon from her window - that'll be me with the green face:)  As we're getting near Hallowe'en I'd like to make a special mention of Louise's ghostly book, Something Wicked (click for Amazon link).

Please do tell us about your Virgo-ness, Louise :)

"Sometimes I feel being born under the sign of Virgo was some kind of cosmic joke. You see, I don’t think I’m a typical Virgo at all. Virgos are supposed to be organised and I’m the most disorganised person I know. I’ve never been on time in my entire life, including to my own wedding. But I’ve never missed a deadline either – although there was that one manuscript which went off at two minutes before midnight … So I suppose you could say being conscientious was a typical Virgo trait."

(nb: my experience of Virgos is that they are either very tidy and organised or the complete opposite!)

"Then there’s the whole ‘Virgos are tidy’ thing. My study looks like a tornado blew through it*, possibly because my idea of filing is to dump everything into a pile on the floor and just keep stepping over it. Virgos don’t mind repetitive and nitty-gritty tasks? Ha! I find repetition boring, and when I’m bored my attention wanders and I begin to dream in plots – resulting in missed appointments and burnt dinners."

"Are there any Virgo traits I will admit to? Well, there’s likes to be of service to others, because I do love to offer help and advice (whether people want it or not) and I’m very loyal. It might take me forever to decide whether I like you, but when I do I’m afraid you’re stuck with me. I’m also very honest. Um, too honest, actually. Don’t ever ask me what I ‘really’ think, unless you really, really want the answer. It’s a wonder I have any friends at all. Curiously enough though, none of them are Virgos …

Famous Virgos? Two of my favourite singers, Beyoncé and Pink, and one of my all-time author heroes, Stephen King!"

Louise is very Virgoan on Twitter where she retweets and shares the posts of others generously.  She is a frequent blogger, and posts lots of articles about castles and places she visits, in Wales and around, with luverly pictures!  See her blog HERE.

I've already used Stephen King for a previous Virgo; instead, I'll make up the Virgo light women's fiction trio with Louise :)

Here is many chick lit lovers' favourite, Marian Keyes....

....and author of that 1980s classic, Lace, amongst others ~ Shirley Conran

Who's next?  A blogging Capricorn :)

The Z Files: Cynthia Harrison ~ Aries

Welcome to The Z Files!  I invited a selection of writers and bloggers to show how the characteristics of their star sign influence their work; they were asked to treat the subject as seriously, cynically or lightly as they liked....  links to all previous posts can be found at the end of this one.
.:*´`*:.

Today it's the turn of Aries writer from Michigan, Cynthia Harrison, one of the most charming people I've met in the writerly Twittersphere.  She writes mostly romantic fiction, published by Wild Rose Press, though is branching out sideways soon ~ all will be revealed.  Last year I read her book Lukes #1 Rule (romance/family drama including a very insightful take on addiction); my review is HERE.

Tell us about your astrological self, Cindy

Aries (with Libra Rising)

"As a fiction writer, I hide behind my laptop screen telling stories, which doesn’t seem like something an Aries would do.  Aries is a fire sign, they like to be first, they tend to take the lead, they want to front the band. Libras are a little less out there. So I get my introversion from the Libra side and my intense drive to create from the Aries end of things."

"I’ve always known I was not a typical Aries, because these folks are not known as shy. I have plenty of Aries friends and they have no problem voicing their opinions and telling you exactly what they think you should do. I tend to go along with what everyone else wants. I’m a peaceful person and avoid conflict, something many Aries don’t mind one bit. They don’t mind getting up to make a speech at a party, either, while I have a panic attack just thinking of myself on a stage or behind a microphone.

I let my Aries out through my characters, who tend to be fearless take-action types. They help me get my Aries daredevil fix in an safe environment wearing yoga pants."

Libra and Aries

You know how you don't see in yourself the traits that others do?  I'd like to add that Cindy is delightfully (and Aries-ly!) straightforward and honest about areas of difficulty within her own life, blogging about them in such a way that others can relate to them, too.  She's generous and helpful - most ram-like :) The balanced and harmonious influence of her Libra rising obviously calms down the Aries fire in a good way!

You can read more from Cindy on her website and follow her on Twitter

Let's find two excellent Aries writers for her....

...here's Lauren Weisberger, the author of The Devil Wears Prada,
one of my favourite books (much better than the film)
and the excellent Everyone Worth Knowing

...and Aries poet and activist, 'we are not worthy' Maya Angelou
