The Z Files: Julie Haiselden ~ Pisces

Astrology ~ a bit of fun, a load of rubbish, or something to take seriously?

I invited around 70 writers/bloggers to write a piece about how typical they are of their sign, and how its traits affect their writing life ~ if at all...

Has your favourite writer been featured yet?  Links to all previous posts at the end of this one :)

Pisces was, initially, one of the two signs from which I had the least response for this feature... maybe because they're all swimming about in their own little world?  Today, I'm delighted to introduce Julie Haiselden, who I first 'met' on Twitter when I read her blog post (have a look at it if you care about such things!) The Use of Language ~ do we dare to care?  Julie has recently published her debut novel, a thriller set in the Lake District, Long Shadows

Float into my corner of cyberspace, Julie, and tell us about being a Pisces writer...

Picture is from a WW2 am-dram production (very Piscean, acting, of course!)

"Pisces is the twelfth house of the zodiac and it’s said that those of us born under this star sign internalise traits from the other eleven houses.  I suspect this may be true as I’m a mass of contradictions.

This is probably why my approach to writing is a little haphazardSometimes I’m enthusiastic and excited and write into the night.  Other times I find every excuse under the sun to avoid going anywhere near my manuscript.

"If procrastination became an Olympic event, I’d be up there on the podium.  I blame Twitter and Facebook and can use up a whole day doing little else; it could be argued this displacement activity is attributable to the negative Piscean traits of laziness and being weak-willed, so actually it’s not my fault.

Our star sign is two fish swimming in opposite directions; we can be as dangerous as a shark and as harmless as a herring.  Lizzie Tennyson, the main character in my novel ‘Long Shadows’ is the personification of this.  Subconsciously I’ve given her some of my own traits (albeit somewhat exaggerated).  She can be considerate, intuitive and altruistic, as can I.  She can also be pessimistic and over-sensitive, as can I."

"I went into a state of abject misery after receiving a three star review.  Forget the five star and four star reviews, all that mattered for days was Mrs Three Stars.

As a cathartic exercise I wrote a blog looking at ways of coping with negative reviews.  I’ve had lots of very positive feedback and my suggested coping mechanism sounded so convincing that I almost believed it myself.  Heaven knows what will happen if I get any one or two star reviews.  I need to look towards the other eleven houses for strength and determination to accept and deal with criticism.  After all, the only alternative is to be a writer who never publishes anything."

"Arguably my strongest Piscean trait is being a dreamer.  I walk regularly, in Devon, Cornwall, Scotland and the Lake District.  As I walk, I plan and plot.  My imaginary world, populated by my imaginary friends, takes over and I come home brimming with ideas.  Some make it to full manuscript others bite the dust on the way.

I find inspiration in everyday events and I’m slightly embarrassed to admit I had a great idea at a funeral.  My long suffering partner will attest to the fact that I scribble on anything; napkins during formal dinners, drinks mats in pubs and even on one occasion his handkerchief (serves him right for not using tissues like the rest of us).

Neptune is our key planet and depicts the dissolution of reality.  Sometimes we rely on escapism and imagination to help us through the tough times; nothing wrong with that but it does help if you’re married to a confident and enthusiastic Arien!"

If she was any more Piscean she'd have scales and gills....!
You can swim along with Julie on Twitter and Facebook

I've chosen two famous fish to wave fins at Julie across the ocean depths ~

... author of the amazingly successful Gone Girl, Gillian Flynn

.... and a fascinating lady indeed, the charismatic and multi-faceted Anais Nin

The Z Files: Maria Savva ~ Pisces

Astrology ~ a bit of fun, a load of rubbish, or something to take seriously?

I invited around 70 writers/bloggers to write a piece about whether or not they're typical of their sign, and how its traits affect their writing life ~ if at all...

Has your favourite writer been featured yet?  Links to all previous posts at the end of this one :)

Look what I've reeled in with my bait today ~ a big welcome for  Pisces novelist and short story writer, and one of the nicest and most helpful people I've met on Twitter, Maria Savva.  She has recently rewritten one of her first novels, and it's also been revamped and republished:  A Time To Tell.  You can find it on Amazon along with its very Piscean cover!

So, Maria, float out from behind that coral, shake off the seaweed and tell us about your Piscean self!

Creative, intuitive, artistic, musically inclined, soft, malleable, forgiving.... but also weak, can live too much in fantasy world, prone to escapism sometimes in form of drink or drugs, can be dishonest, but live so much in fantasy world that they believe own lies.

"I’ve always been interested in astrology. When I was a teenager I read “Linda Goodman’s Sun Signs” and it really made sense to me, so since then I’ve leaned towards believing that there’s some truth in it all. I even made my own birth chart once. I know that I have a Leo moon and that my rising sign is Taurus."

"I think I’m a fairly typical Piscean. I’ve always been quite shy, which is a typical trait. Creativity has always been a major thing for me. I loved art at school and, of course, creative writing. I’d say I’m very intuitive and tend to follow my feelings more than anything else. I have a wild imagination and I admit I probably do live too much in a fantasy world. I am a dreamer. I can totally believe something for ages and then have a ‘wake up’ moment realising it was not at all true. It’s Neptune’s influence, apparently—the planet that rules Pisces and is the master of illusion. I love having such a vivid imagination as it lends itself well to writing fiction, but it can sometimes mean the line between reality and fantasy in my own life sometimes becomes blurry. It’s fine though, as I’ve never been much of a fan of reality! :)"

I think Maria even looks Piscean - ooh look, and she's sitting by the sea!  You can find out more about her and her numerous books on her website (there are several novels of assorted genres, and she's written short story collections of her own, as well as contributing to various anthologies), and follow her on Twitter, where she is a great retweeter and supporter of others' work.  And let's not forget her music blog on the UK Arts Directory!

I was a bit stumped when choosing famous Pisces writers for Maria, as her work goes across the board (thus, the mutable fish), so I chose two completely different ones:

....Victorian poet, born in County Durham, Elizabeth Barrett Browning

.... and American chick lit author Emily Giffin:)

The Z Files ~ Sacha Black ~ Pisces

Welcome to The Z Files ~ I invited writers/bloggers to produce a piece about how the characteristics of their star sign show theselves in their work; contributors were told to treat the subject as seriously, lightly or cynically as they like!  For other posts, please click links on the list at the end of this one.

The first Pisces writer to wave her fins at my blog followers ~
Sacha Black.  I've 'met' Sacha via the blog share days on Twitter, where she posts many an article filled with advice for writers, but a whole bunch of other weird and wonderful stuff, too.  She's just getting her first YA/NA fantasy/dystopian novel ready for publication.

Sacha, please tell us what being a Pisces is like for you...

"By birth I’m a Pisces, but in reality I’m closer to an Aries than a Pisces. I guess that might be because it’s the next star sign, which would make me a hybrid.

Pisces are said to be creative and intuitive. That’s definitely me, I am extremely creative, and try to bring creativity into everything I do, both at work and naturally through my writing.  Writing isn’t my only creative outlet. I am also a trained nail technician but specialise in patterns and art as opposed to standard nails. I also do pencil portraits."

"Pisces are said to live in a fantasy world. I less live in a fantasy world, than I do spend all my time creating them for my stories. As a fantasy writer, I am constantly thinking of new fantastical worlds I can conjure for my characters to live and cause chaos in! Perhaps that does make me a little Piscean after all!  (Yes, you've revealed must more Piscean-ness than you probably realise!!)

However, where I differ to a Pisces is that they are weak. One of the words anyone close to me would use to describe me is ‘strong’. This is where I am much more like an Aries. At work I am a leader, I am driven and sadly just like an Aries, I can be brusque and impatient!!"

Indeed, I suspect there may well be a fair bit of Aries lurking round the next coral reef!   The whole nail art and pencil drawings stuff is very fishy, though.  I think it's only the 'lower' types who are weak; the 'higher' of any sign shows less of the negative traits.

Here is the link to Sacha's blog, and you can follow her on Twitter  ~
where she is very Pisceanly kind and helpful, retweeting generously on 'blog share' hashtag days!

... and here are two Piscean writers for Sacha to compare herself with...

First, the cool one ~ beat generation icon Jack Kerouac

... and then there's this lady, who I think wrote some books about a misogynist who ties women up, or something.  I reckon they sold a fair few but I can't for the life of me think what they're called....
